ACHF Arts Access ACHF Arts Education ACHF Cultural Heritage
1: "Regional residents experience increased access to the arts via a reduction in geographic, cultural and/or physical barriers." Culturally this knowledge is kept within small family groups; the classes will expand that and provide access to Upper Sioux Community adult and youth members who do not have someone within their family to teach them. The classes will also bring in artists that do not reside in the Upper Sioux Community, providing residence with access to instructors previously separated by distance. 8: "Regional residents learn new arts skills and techniques." Participants will learn the artistic skills for making regalia including sewing, beading and color theory. They will learn the history and meaning of regalia pieces and designs specific to our people. Participants will learn basic steps for their chosen dance styles, the different types of songs common to dances and general social dances. 11: "Regional residents build connections to their own and others' cultural heritage through regional arts and cultural events and/or activities." Participants will build a stronger connection with their own heritage, building pride and cultural identity. They will be directly affected by this change as will their family, friends and fellow community members to benefit from the sharing of knowledge. We will determine our achievement in two ways. First, participants in the classes will be given a short survey at the end of class asking less than ten questions. These will be focused on the knowledge they gained and how they feel about it. Staff will also engage students in conversation, giving them a chance to expand on how they felt about the classes and what they learned. Notes will be taken from these conversations and include in a final report, as will details of total community participation in the Final Event. Second, instructors will be given a more in-depth survey focusing on their overall experience with the program and what changes it has brought for them as an artist. They will also be engaged in conversation by program staff who will take notes on any additional input shared.
