ACHF Arts Access
Arts organizations build relationships with members of, or organizations that serve, groups that have traditionally been underserved by the arts or by the applicant organization. Real or perceived barriers to participation are identified and addressed. More Minnesotans are able to participate in the arts.
A) Music Learning: conducted music lessons on vocal/guitar/drum/rock band, offered twice a week as 30 min individual lessons. Improvising and composing opportunities for youth, using their known musical vocabulary and infuse what they have learnt of different styles of music, and assist in composition of music for the YIYUSA Dance Drama. Summer Monday-Thursday Daily DJ and music mixing at BOB FM and showcasing through Radio ASIA 106.3 HD. B) Acrobatics Learning: Conducted weekly acrobatics class, with focusing on human pyramid, plate spinning, ball juggling and Chinese yoyo tricks. The teacher has planned as half hour warm up, and half hour flexibility and two hours of skill building. Three community performances additionally joined the YIYUSA performance at February 23-24, 2013 at the O’Shaughnessy Auditorium. Our project has targeted low income and “at-risk” Southeast Asian refugee/Pan African refugee youth, aged between 12-18 years old, who lack of financial resources to participate at the tuition based arts classes. We have all youth participants to fill out the survey to evaluate the program result at the end of program. We have 92% satisfaction rate. Once again, we have to expand our after-school program Arts Around Us Project to support at risk of youth of color. The project was offered at Asian Media Access’ headquarters – Multimedia Arts Complex in the heart of the North Minneapolis poorest neighborhoods. We have successfully recruited 61 youth to participate at the Arts Around Us with diverse ethnicities, mostly Southeast Asian and Pan African (African American, Somali, Ethiopian youth) refugees.
