Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Bedlam Theatre will bring together 150 artists and community members in two neighborhoods to provide direct participation in creating innovative short works. The success of these outcomes will be evident through demographic surveys, conversations, and participation rates from underserved populations. 2: Bedlam Theatre will strengthen our ongoing partnerships with the Center for Hmong Arts and Talent and New Native Theatre, while building new community connections with underserved populations. The success of these outcomes will be evident through demographic surveys, conversations, and participation rates from underserved populations. Evidence of overcome barriers include participation rates of first-time artists and new-comers to Bedlam Theatre.

Measurable Outcome(s)

Bedlam Theatre’s 2013 10Fest: Play With What You Got and The Big Lowdown brought together 273 artists and community members together in Lowertown St. Paul and Cedar/Riverside in Minneapolis to directly create 24 short works. Artist numbers and performance pieces were tracked by production manager Birdie Freitag. Survey responses from the artists highlighted the value of low-pressure auditions, the structured sense of fun, and the joy of collaborating with new people. 2: Our working relationships with both organizations grew throughout the grant period, vastly aided by the collaborations through the performances. Center for Hmong Arts and Talent artists performed and directed in The Big Lowdown, and New Native Theatre artists performed and directed in 10Fest: Play With What You Got, as tracked by production manager and creative leads. Kathy Mouacheupao, former executive director of Center for Hmong Arts and Talent, was one of the community outreach leaders for The Big Lowdown, and New Native Theatre Artistic Director Rhiana Yazzie performed in a piece written by New Native Theatre ensemble member Andrea Fairbanks Additional community partners included Dangerous Productions, Summit University Planning Council, New Age Salon, Next Generation Drumline, St. Paul Neighborhood News, Nautilus Music Theatre, West Side Theatre Project, Macalester College, and more. Participants and audiences represented the East Side, West Side, SummitUniversity, Lowertown, Downtown, Dayton’s Bluff, ThomasDale (Frogtown), and West Seventh neighborhoods, as well as Minneapolis and beyond.
