Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

45% of the brass players of the Nevis Band program will increase their skills and knowledge of both tone and technique on their particular brass instrument and have a basic understanding how these fundamentals relate to their performed music. Each individual brass player will complete surveys prior to and following the Cooper Street Brass Residency scheduled for October 11-12, 2012.

Measurable Outcome(s)

After the two-day residency with the Cooper Street Brass Quintet there has been a significant improvement with brass players in grade 5-12. All students, including woodwinds and percussionists have been conscious of how their posture and listening skills affect their playing. After the residency students results were 60% better on a survey of common concepts than before the residency. In student music lessons I had brass students perform some of the techniques they had learned about breath support, pitch control and how to hear the music before playing it and each student showed a significant improvement from prior weeks of music lessons. Brass students are also more aware of breath support and how fast their air speed needs to be to play different notes on the scale. The end result has been an ensemble that is in tune with each other and a group that is listening for each part of the music to be present.
