Arts and Cultural Heritage Grant
ACHF Arts Access ACHF Cultural Heritage
Beltrami County Historical Society, in conjunction with Lake of the Woods Historical Society, intends to bring audiences a high quality arts experience through performances in Bemidji and Baudette of talented and respected folklorist and musician John Berquist. The performance will entertain the audience and celebrate the shared north woods heritage of the communities while educating the audience about the ethnic and cultural diversity of the men who worked in lumber camps and how those cultures contributed to the lumberjack musical tradition.Following the concert volunteers will conduct a survey of 5% of the audience to track the quality of their experience. The randomly chosen audience members surveyed will be asked to rate on a scale of 1-5 their enjoyment of the performance and the concert as an educational experience. They will also be asked to name something they learned about the lumberjack musical tradition and whether they would attend a similar event in the future. The History Centers will also track visitation on the day of the concert to determine attendance.
We observed audience members smiling, laughing, clapping, and swaying during the performances, and our evaluation surveys demonstrated that audience members learned a lot and had fun doing it. Of the twelve survey participants three marked “4” or “enjoyed
