Project Details
Conduct a 12 week Story to Literacy with 3rd graders at Minnehaha Elementary School in Two Harbors, first using storytelling and creative drama activities to teach key curricular elements of narratives orally, the helping students transfer this knowledge into writing and listening skills.

Students learn the narrative concepts of beginning, middle, end, character, action, central problem or main idea, setting and theme; practice thinking for themselves when reading or hearing stories; learn that stories can be change/revised; own their own writing; and score acceptable or improved reading scores.Teaching artist and teachers evaluate progress of residency weekly, revising lesson plans when needed and prioritizing concept goals; assessing a pre and post timed writing test for students; noting reading test score change; administer an anonymous student survey on attitudes toward reading and writing.

Improved reading skills and trust in students own critical and imaginative faculties.
