Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Techniques to be learned/evaluated are: Working with reed (craftsmanship), simple over-under wire, twining, shaping, working with wood splints, rimming. The art appreciation components include; understanding of vocabulary words introduced in the unit, definition of craft, understanding of Native American cultures in Minnesota.See downloaded file which includes: Rubric: Gathering basket/Exit report.

Measurable Outcome(s)

This residency provided the New London-Spicer Art Department with a new media. Students were able to express themselves in a way that would not have been available to them without this grant. The technical requirements for basket weaving push students to pay attention to details, take their time, and focus on craftsmanship. In my opinion, these particular skills are declining in students today and any lesson that forces them to use their hands/heads in such a manner is incredibly important. The baskets also had a 'wow factor'. Staff, parents, administration were completely impressed that our students could make the basket that Janet taught us. The baskets demonstrated to the public the importance of a strong art program.
