This project was designed to replicate the Northfield program to increase graduation rates for Latino students.

Appropriation Language

Councils of Color. $500,000 the first year and $500,000 the second year are for competitive grants to the Council on Asian Pacific Minnesotans, the Council on Black Minnesotans, the Indian Affairs Council, and the Chicano Latino Affairs Council. Grants are for programs and cooperation between the Minnesota Humanities Center and the grant recipients for community events and programs that celebrate and preserve artistic, historical, and cultural heritage.

  • Establish a replicable frame to engage Latino families and students in post-secondary planning
  • Engage students in culturally significant educational opportunities to recognize and value Latino students' cultural identities and needs
  • Motivate students to identify and achieve their post-secondary goals
Measurable Outcome(s)
  • As a result of the student retreat with 25 Humboldt students and parents we addressed graduation requirements and post-secondary planning
  • We provided culturally significant educational opportunities valuing Latino culture by going to the Science Museum to see the Maya exhibit and film
  • Students attended the Mixed Blood Theater production "The Sun Serpent" and learned more about the Aztecs and the conquest of Mexico
  • Students went to see the movie "Cesar Chavez" to learn more about the famed civil rights leaders and labor activist committed to better wages and conditions for farm workers
