Expanding Access to American Indian Objects from the Bishop Whipple Collections
Partner Organization: Science Museum of Minnesota.
The Science Museum of Minnesota and the Minnesota Historical Society each maintain important historical collections of American Indian cultural objects assembled by Bishop Henry Benjamin Whipple. The objects document the changes experienced by the Dakota and Ojibwe in Minnesota in the 19th century.
ACHF funds are enabling the Society and Science Museum to fully research, catalog and digitally record the 500 objects in the Whipple collection. The two institutions are also collaborating on a web site that will enable wider audiences to interact with these images and learn stories about this important collection of artifacts.
(d) History Partnerships. $1,250,000 in 2010 and $2,750,000 in 2011 are for partnerships between and with the Minnesota Historical Society and partnering organizations to enhance access to Minnesota's history and cultural heritage in all regions of the state.
