Minnesota is fortunate to have more than 500 active historical organizations across the state, ranging from county and local historical organizations to topical historical organizations, such as transportation history museums, to organizations that preserve historic structures.

Each of these organizations serves an important role in preserving significant stories of the people and events of Minnesota.

Through the Minnesota Historical and Cultural Heritage Grants Program, the Minnesota Historical Society, with the assistance of the Historic Resources Advisory Committee (a citizen advisory panel), awarded 474 grants, totaling $6.55 million, through a competitive process to 343 organizations in 86 Minnesota counties.

Despite the tremendous success of this program, the need for Historical and Cultural Heritage Grants is great and demand outweighed available resources by a ratio of six to one.
