Project Overview

The zoo will develop, pilot and initiate a distance learning program for schools throughout Minnesota to build awareness, knowledge and understanding of Minnesota's rich cultural and natural heritage and wildlife conservation efforts. This program will assist Minnesota teachers and students in making progress toward science standards related to interdependence in living systems and human interactions and make the zoo's expertise and living collection more accessible to schools in greater Minnesota.

Participating studens will

  • demonstrate a more complex and accurate understanding of Minnesota wildlife and their interactions with each other, their environment and humans.
  • be able to identify at least one connection between Minnesota animals and their environment.
  • be able to identify one current challenge to Minnesota wildlife and wild places.
  • will express a desire to learn more about Minnesota wildlife and natural heritage.
  • will feel responsibility towards Minnesota wildlife and Minnesota's natural heritage and feel a sense of duty about conservation.
  • will have fun/positive experience related to Minnesota wildlife and natural heritage.
  • will indicate awareness of different human perspectives about Minnesota wildlife.
Measurable Outcome(s)
  • Research was completed on distrance learning best practices and curriculum was developed.
  • A naturalist position was created to lead the program.
  • Live sessions between naturalist and classrooms have been webcast.
