Project Overview
Mascot Mania was actually a three-part program. The first part included each branch hosting a children's book character mascot at their library. Each of our 14 branches held a program that included an appearance by a children's book character, a storytime and a picture taking session. Book characters included Curious George, Llama Llama, Maisy, Clifford and more. These programs were a pre-cursor to the eventual unveiling of ECRL's new mascot. A mascot was designed and a naming contest held. The winning name of Sherlock was chosen and Sherlock the Fox, ECRL's new mascot as born. Sherlock then traveled to each of the ECRL's 14 branches. His program included an introduction to Sherlock, a library themed storytime and a promotion to get kids and adults to sign up for library cards. A drawing was held for those with ECRL cards to sign up to have their picture taken with Sherlock posted on the ALA Flickr website for September Library Card Sign-Up Month at http://www.flickr.com/groups/showusyourlibrarycard/

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Attendees will get the opportunity to meet their favorite children's book character up close and personal and have their picture taken with them, thus being able to make the correlation between the book and the character. Early exposure to books and will foster a lifetime pattern of reading. The program will also enhance listening skills, vocabulary, school readiness and encourage library card signup and use.

Measurable Outcome(s)

Over 90% of those in attendance at the book character based storytimes knew who the character was and 100% of those surveyed were thrilled to meet them at the library. A surprising response was the number of attendees that said they had not checked out books or dvds about the character from the library. The results varied from library to library with as many as 73% of those surveyed at 7 branch libraries answering they did not check out books from their library. 61% of those attending the Sherlock programs had ECRL cards and 30% visited their libraries at least 3 times a month.
