Project Overview

KMOJ will produce and air multi faceted, interwoven projects relating to African music traditions that are germane to African American culture. The various parts of the projects are:

Produce a four-hour documentary with influential producers, historians, local artists, and music teachers
Create and air 90 second vignettes that will highlight the five genres
Work directly with the High School of Recording Arts to produce the documentary
Plan and adverte the KMOJ History and Art Festival on June 27, 2015
Free teaching seminar for students that will be held during the festival
Work directly with the High School of Recording Arts students to write, compose, play, and sing an original song at the festival, with Grammy Award winning director, Gary Hines.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

KMOJ will produce and air a four-hour documentary celebrating genres of music rooted in the West African tradition. Along with a day long History and Art Festival, the project will embrace and pass these music styles, plus remind the listeners that these African traditions are evident in the genres that are typically considered germane to African American culture, including gospel, blues, jazz, R&B, and hip-hop.
