KMSU - Collaboration with MSU Music Dept. Performance Series
This collaboration combines live performance music with educational outreach. The educational outreach is especially geared toward K-12 students. Dale Haefner in the MSU Music Department researches a wide variety of musicians and identifies those that offer unique music education experiences for young people. These opportunities are then offered to area K-12 schools. These educational outreach opportunities are typically offered to schools within the Mankato area School District 77, but can be offered outside the district as well. These music education opportunities are not considered part of Minnesota State University’s curriculum or mission, nor is there institutional funding available to support them. The K-12 schools within District 77, as well as all K-12 schools within KMSU’s service area, have no internal or external funding to pay for these music education opportunities.
Arts, culture and history will be interwoven into every facet of community life: Exposure to live performance musical artists and their instruments in an up-close environment is an invaluable opportunity. More Minnesotans of all ages, ethnicities, abilities and incomes will participate in the arts, culture and history: The area school districts serve students of all ethnic and socio-economic backgrounds. People will trust Minnesota’s stewardship of public arts, culture and history funding: These Performance Series events actually do “double duty”, with an enriching cultural event for the whole community, combined with an educational opportunity for K-12 students. Arts, culture and history will thrive in Minnesota: Programs such as this collaboration encourage appreciation and participation in live performance music. More student exposure to professional performing arts, and the work of professional artists: This outcome includes students of all ages, since the live public performances are typically staged on the University campus. More K-12 students can affordably learn to read music and play a music instrument, participate in dance, choral, drama and other performing arts: The level of participation is unique for K-12 students, and it’s free to the school district. How outcomes will be measured: -Number of students involved, Arbitron/Radio Research Consortium ratings information, internet and Social media statistics
- Four live concerts
- The concerts took place over a nine-month period
