Project Overview
ArtStart will present: 5 sessions of ‘Of Bees and Butterflies’. Children will work with naturalist Larry Wade to learn about pollinator friendly gardens and then work with artist Jeanette Dickinson to create a “bee”-utiful garden container for pollinator plants. 2 sessions of ‘Seed CD Art’: Using a variety of seeds from brown and white beans to yellow lentils to green peas, children will create a seed mosaic pattern or image in its own ready-made frame using a CD case. 1 session of ‘River Weavings’: As the Mississippi River weaves southward from its source in northern Minnesota, river currents carry bits and pieces from the land. Create river weavings using natural materials, yarns, and other found materials that capture the beauty of this natural resource. 3 sessions of ‘Japanese Folkart Traditions’: Get ready for a travel adventure to Japan led by artist Linda Hashimoto! Participants will explore the customs and traditions of Japanese culture, learn how to make origami, create a Japanese lantern, taste different foods, dress in a kimono, and perform several Japanese dances. 1 session of ‘Folkarts of India’: What better time than summer to take a whirlwind tour of India with artist Shakun Maheshwari. Explore the customs and traditions of Indian culture, look at clothing, and learn words and phrases in Hindi. Then you create a drawing and painting using traditional Indian designs. 3 sessions of ‘African Drumming’: Work with master drummer, Ghana Mbaye from Senegal, and learn how to drum on authentic African drums, including the djembe. Practice basic rhythmic patterns that have been passed on for generations.
