Project Overview
Poetry can emerge in all places, sometimes where you'd least expect it. Hear about two projects that bring poetry to non-traditional places. The Women's Writing Program conducts poetry writing workshops at the Ramsey County Correctional Facility. Workshop leaders and local writers, Diego Vázquez and Marcie Rendon will describe their program which leads women inmates to poetry writing. The City of Saint Paul's Sidewalk Poetry project stamps the lines of local poets into city cement walkways. Project originator, Marcus Young will relate his efforts to bring poetry underfoot, to our city sidewalks.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

This program gives the public a chance to hear about two non-traditional poetry programs. There will be a chance to hear from the poets themselves, so it will be a poetry experience that will encourage people to think about poetry arising from areas not expected. Also, I think the program will serve as an important public performance for the Women's Writing Project. It's beneficial for the women poets, who are former inmates, to have a voice and also to receive some recognition for their efforts as they reenter our communities.
