Enjoy folk music from around the world as part of MELSA's Live at the Library series, celebrate Juneteenth with community musicians at Juneteenth Celebrations, and celebrate Somali culture with music with an open mic night and a performance by a local Somali musician at Somali Cultural Festivals.

For Live at the Library/Global Folk: Patrons will experience world music. Patrons will learn about the history of the music. Patrons will check out related library materials. For Juneteenth Celebrations, patrons will learn about Juneteenth, experience African-American culture, learn about artists and arts programs in the community, and check out materials by African American authors or featuring characters of color. For Somali Cultural Festivals, patrons will learn more about library programs and services, patrons will learn more about Somali traditions, culture and/or history, and the Hennepin County Library and the Somali community will develop stronger connections with each other.

Measurable Outcome(s)

For Live at the Library/Global Folk: 100% experienced world music. 94% learned about the history of the music. 58% planned to check out related library materials. 100% rated the quality of the program good or better. Selected Comments: "Good combo of music w/ explanation of background.” “Great fun & great community resource.” For Juneteenth Celebrations 100% learned about Juneteenth, 100% experienced African-American culture, 100% learned about artists and arts programs in the community, and 82%planned to check out materials by African American authors or featuring characters of color. 100% rated the quality of the program as good or better. For Somali Cultural Festivals, 100% learned more about library programs and services, 100% learned more about Somali traditions, culture and/or history, and 82% believed that the Hennepin County Library and the Somali community developed stronger connections with each other.
