Project Overview
The Loft Literary Center will coordinate activities for metro area involvement of the national Poetry Out Loud program and expand regional participation from high school students in the metro area. Teaching artist led online poetry reading and writing workshops will be developed for three unique groups of program participants: high school English teachers, participating high school students, and members of the metro area literary community. Online classes will be targeted at teachers, youth, and the general public. The class for teachers will also feature a special lesson on teaching the art of memorization and recitation. In addition, the Loft will hire poets to serve as judges at the metro-area based semifinals and state Poetry Out Loud competition.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

More students will participate in the Poetry Out Loud contest. Minnesota poets will be involved as program judges, online instructors, and the public will have a dynamic opportunity to deepen and broaden their engagement with, and celebration of, poetry.

Measurable Outcome(s)

More public activities were held: an online course; in-person creative writing courses in conjunction with the semifinals; poets served as judges at the semifinals and state Poetry Out Loud competitions; and a poetry celebration reading featuring the 2014 Poetry Out Loud state champion, Faiza Abubakar, was held at Open Book in late fall. These events increased participation in, and awareness of, poetry.
