Project Overview
In the month of February, the Watonwan County Library collaborated with 4H, and Community Education to offer four workshops about the arts to kids in elementary school. These workshops were offered in the communities of St. James, Madelia, and Butterfield. Workshop 1: Bookmakers from the Minnesota Center for the Book Arts showed the kids how to make a pamphlet-stitch sketchbook. Workshop 2: Author and illustrator Derek Anderson visited the Madelia Elementary School and talked about his art to the Madelia Afterschool Adventures group. Kids in Butterfield created junk hot rod sculptures based on Hot Rod Hamster, a children's picture book illustrated by Derek Anderson. Workshop 3: Kids created marble printings called suminagashi. Suminagashi or "floating ink" is the process of marbling plain paper with water and ink to transform it into something vibrant and colorful. It originated in Japan as early as the 12th century. Workshop 4: Anjee Mai Emerson of Claymate Creations instructed the kids on how to make characters from clay.
