Project Overview
Storyteller Yvonne Cory spoke at the Darfur branch library about Gingham fabric and aprons. It was the first time she had presented that program. Library staff reported that Cory is a wonderful presenter, but she went very long.
Storyteller and artist Yvonne Cory uses her extensive heirloom collection dating
from 1800’s to the present to share Joys & Tears stories about their textile arts as
well as historical and cultural information. “Joys & Tears in the Apron Strings,” offers six programs. During each performance, Yvonne wears an appropriate costume and apron.

Even though her presentation went long, some people still stayed. Everyone reported that she was an excellent presenter. Gingham was one of the first fabrics produced in the United States. It is made of cotton and is made of dyed threads so that the pattern is the same on both sides of the fabric. It is lightweight, and breathable and was considered “junk” so it was used for feed sacks. Some of the oldest aprons are made out of gingham fabric.
