Project Overview
The Battery’s Thunder in the Valley was a 90-minute display of cannon fire from 11 organizations throughout the Upper Midwest, including the New Ulm Battery. The groups were accompanied by a band of local musicians directed by New Ulm Municipal Band Director Don Jirak that coordinated their firing to patriotic music such as the “1812 Overture” and “The Stars and Stripes Forever.” The event was part of the Battery’s 150th anniversary celebration, and it was coordinated with events marking the 125th anniversary of the laying of the Hermann Monument cornerstone. Thunder in the Valley was the culmination of the Battery’s 150th anniversary programs. Members of the New Ulm Battery presented a photo history at the library in December 2012, and library staff created a photo display of the Battery in September 2013. In addition, the Battery worked with the library and the Brown County Historical Society to produce an informational presentation that included a tour of the Battery House in New Ulm, which included information about saddles, caisson, and other equipment. The Battery House tour occurred August 20 during events to commemorate the U.S.-Dakota War.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

The grant application indicated that written evaluations would be distributed. However, because of the large number of people who attended and because it was an outdoor event in which people were disbursed throughout a large park, the formal evaluation process was discarded. Instead, observation and anecdotal responses were used to collect measurable outcomes. It was expected that a majority of attendees would actively watch the program and positively respond by clapping and cheering. Anecdotal responses would indicate appreciation and enthusiasm for the program and an interest in preserving the history of the New Ulm Battery.

Measurable Outcome(s)

Librarian observed a very large audience of all ages gathered in Harman Park on lawn chairs, picnic tables, and blankets. There was clapping after every song and accompaniment by the cannon groups, including a standing ovation at the program’s conclusion. Anecdotal responses included: “A delightful experience of sight, sound, taste and smell. Overjoyed to see families and groups of friends of all ages gathering to enjoy this quality event to commemorate an important anniversary of a unique and historical community establishment.” “Fantastic event.” “I’ve never seen anything like that before.”
