Project Overview
In March, the library worked with the 410 Project on a Project Puppet Workshop. The workshop introduced kids to the idea of creating a work of art and using the creation in a myriad of artistic forms. Students created simple puppets made from various materials: paper, pencils, sticks, fabric, etc. The students created a character and a corresponding narrative to accompany the piece. By the end of construction, the students spoke a unique puppet language. In April, the library collaborated with the Loft Literary Center on two creative writing workshops. In Fairy Tales and Dinosaurs (K-3rd grade), kids explored the basics of storytelling through the lens of fairy tales and stories about favorite pets, real and imagined: from dogs to dinosaurs. In Writing the Stories You Want to Read (4th-6th grade), young writers and avid readers learned how to generate story ideas, create compelling characters, and craft exciting scenes. This class was generative: students read, wrote, and created together and shared what they wrote with peers in the classroom. The focus of this class was learning the basic craft elements of storytelling. Unfortunately, the author showed up at the Le Sueur library for the event so was a half an hour late to the event. Some kids stayed and some did not. We were quite disappointed. In May, the library collaborated with the Minnesota Raptor Center. The Center brought live raptors and taught the kids about these fascinating birds. We planned to hold the event behind the library in Trowbridge Park, but it was too windy, so we held the event inside the library.
