Project Overview
Independent historian Del Begalka presented an hour-long program focusing on Jesse James and the James-Younger Gang in Minnesota. Begalka’s great-grandfather was a member of the posse that caught some of James’ gang near Madelia. Begalka provided biographical information about James, then discussed the attempted Northfield bank robbery and subsequent manhunt for the James-Younger Gang across southern Minnesota in 1876. Begalka also showed replicas of the pistols used during that time. A question-and-answer session followed the formal presentation.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Written surveys were distributed to all attendees at both presentations. It was expected that a majority of respondents would learn something about Jesse James, develop a better understanding of the James-Younger Gang’s activities in Minnesota and indicate they are interested in learning more about Jesse James and the James-Younger Gang.

Measurable Outcome(s)

The vast majority of survey respondents (48% response rate) at Orchard Hill indicated they learned something about Jesse James and that the program helped them develop a better understanding of the gang’s activities in Minnesota. Just more than half of the respondents indicated they are interested in learning more about Jesse James and his gang. There was a 75% response rate at the library program, and the vast majority indicated they learned something about Jesse James and that the program helped them develop a better understanding of the gang’s activities in Minnesota. 77% of respondents indicated they are interested in learning more about Jesse James and his gang. Librarian observed a majority of attendees at the library program quietly listening to the program. After the formal presentation, there were a number of questions posed to the presenter, which provided even more information about Jesse James and his gang. Anecdotal responses included: “Amazing new facts!” “He kept it very interesting.”
