Lunch and a Bite of History is a week-long series of presentations focused on historical research related to the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862. All presentations will be about 40 minutes with a 15-minute Q&A to follow. Some presenters will conclude with a book signing session. The schedule is as follows: Monday, Aug 18 - Sandee Geshick of the Lower Sioux Community will discuss the role of women in Dakota society over time. / Tuesday, Aug 19 - Dan Munson, author of "Malice Toward None: Abraham Lincoln, the Civil War, the Homestead Act, and the Massacre--and Glorious Survival--of the Kochendorfers," which chronicles the lives of four children orphaned by the Dakota War and whose descendants now number more than 1000. / Wednesday, Aug 20 - Darryl Sannes of the Brooklyn Historical Society will discuss the Battle of Action through the lens of an intricate map restored by the historical society. / Thursday, Aug 21 - Dr. Don Heinrich Tolzmann, a Minnesota native and retired curator of the German Americana Collection and Director of the German-American Studies Program at the University of Cincinnati, will discuss Jacob Nix, a German immigrant who was Commandant of New Ulm during the Dakota War. / Friday, Aug 22 - Jan Klein and the Friends and Family of Dakota Uprising Victims will discuss their new publications, "What Happened to the Settlers in Renville County? The Aftermath of the U.S.-Dakota War."

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Written surveys will be distributed to all attendees at each session. It is expected that a majority of respondents at each program will indicate they gained a greater understanding of local history, have a greater appreciation for unique cultural perspectives and interpretations, have a greater appreciation for critical historical events that continue to shape Minnesota's political, economic, social, and community environment today and will share a positive review of the program with others.

Measurable Outcome(s)

There was an overwhelmingly positive response to all five programs presented. The vast majority of respondents indicated they learned more about U.S.-Dakota war of 1862 and were able to place the presenters' talks into the broader context of the conflict.
