Project Overview
In recognition of Women’s History Month, Dr. Joachim Reppmann discussed Angela Merkel, German Lady Chancellor, chairwoman of the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), and trained Ph.D. physicist. Merkel grew up behind the Iron Curtain in Communistic East Germany as a daughter of a Lutheran pastor. Dr. Reppmann spoke about Merkel's rise to power and the issues she faces today as one of the world’s most powerful heads of state. A Q&A session followed the presentation.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Written surveys were distributed to all attendees at the presentation. It was expected that a majority
of respondents would:

• learn something about Angela Merkel’s background.
• learn something about the issues Merkel faces with Russia.
• share a favorable review of this program with others.

In addition, library staff would observe a majority of attendees actively engaged in the program by
listening attentively and asking questions. Anecdotal responses from attendees would confirm their enjoyment of the program.

Measurable Outcome(s)

Although there were a couple of comments that criticized the presenter for straying off topic, many audience members appeared to enjoy Dr. Reppmann’s enthusiasm. This librarian observed audience members listening quietly, and there was a lengthy Q&A session following the formal presentation.

Anecdotal responses included: “This speaker was very energetic/excellent speaker & presentation.” and
“For sure (interested in attending future library programs) & will buy some DVDs of the program. Thank
goodness it was recorded.”
