Project Overview
Minnesota musicians Datta Hartman and Bill Lee of Ten Penny Tunes shared a 45-minute family concert with children and their families at the New Ulm Public Library. The duo, performing as Ten Penny Tunes, shared a variety of folk music from many different cultures on an amusing collection of instruments. Audience participation, including dancing, was encouraged. Both musicians are teachers and have performed numerous times in the St. Paul Library System. This duo came highly recommended by the St. Paul Legacy program coordinator.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Written evaluations were given to all adult attendees. It was expected that a majority of respondents would:
• learn at least one new children’s song.
• be interested in checking out music CDs from the library.
• express interest in attending another family program at the library.
• want to tell a friend or family member about the library and its programs.

Measurable Outcome(s)

Written surveys were given to all adults attending the program. All of those who completed the survey stated they enjoyed the family concert and learned at least
one new song. Seventy percent of concertgoers expressed interest in checking out music CDs from the library’s collection. The majority also indicated they would be interested in attending a future family program at the
library. It was also rewarding to see that all said they would tell a friend or family member about the New Ulm Public Library and its programs.

From this librarian’s perspective, the Ten Penny Tunes Kids’ Concert was fantastic! Children and adults greatly enjoyed the evening’s music. Both Bill and Datta did a great job making the concert interactive, educational, and fun. It’s definitely a program I would recommend to other libraries. From the comments included on the surveys,
it is clear that patrons of all ages enjoyed the program. Here are a few of the comments:
“Fun and upbeat”
“Lots of family fun!”
“Variety of music – great!”
