Project Overview
Mankato author Jennifer Schwertfeger presented a 45-minute program based on her book “Life With Grace” as part of the Life Living Series in New Ulm. The presentation focused on the story of the Schwertfeger family’s life after the birth of their daughter Grace at 24 weeks. A short video, Q&A session, and book signing session followed the presentation. To help promote the Life Living Series, the library created a display of materials featuring the topics being addressed by the speakers of the Life Living Series. The display included nonfiction materials, including memoirs, related to families caring for children with disabilities.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Written surveys were distributed to all attendees at the program. It was expected that a majority of
respondents would:
• learn something about the Schwertfeger family.
• gain a greater understanding of caring for a child with special needs.
• indicate they would share a positive review of the program with others.
• be interested in reading Jennifer Schwertfeger’s book and/or other inspirational stories.

In addition, library staff would observe a majority of attendees actively engaged in the program by listening attentively and asking questions. Anecdotal responses from attendees would confirm their enjoyment of the program.

Measurable Outcome(s)

Written surveys were given to those attending the program. See attached compilation of these written
evaluations. The surveys reflect that the vast majority of respondents learned something about the
Schwertfeger family. The vast majority of respondents also indicated they gained a greater understanding of
caring for a child with special needs. Attendees overwhelmingly indicated they would share a positive review of the program and are interested in attending another Life Living Series or library program. Sixty-four percent of respondents expressed interest in reading Jennifer’s book or other inspirational stories.

From this librarian’s perspective, Jennifer Schwertfeger’s presentation was a great success. Although
attendance was not as great as anticipated, those who attended expressed positive reviews of the program,
asked questions of the speaker, and remained after the formal presentation to talk with Jennifer, purchase a
book, and have the book signed. Jennifer’s husband and children, including Grace, attended, so audience
members were able to meet and greet the entire family.

Anecdotal responses included: “Inspiring.” and “It was very interesting.”
