Project Overview
Mike Roberts, author of the memoir “The Last Keeper at Split Rock,” spoke for just more than one hour about his life as a lightkeeper at Split Rock Lighthouse on the North Shore of Lake Superior. Roberts shared stories of the history of the lighthouse and included humorous anecdotes about his experiences. He showed a short video that aired on KSTP’s “On the Road with Jason Davis” and displayed photos of and artifacts from the North Shore. The program concluded with a Q&A session and book signing. Roberts’ visit was part of Minnesota Proud, a New Ulm Area Community Education/New Ulm Public Library cooperative effort that brought talented Minnesota artists and authors to the local community. Other presenters were photographer Doug Ohman and TPT/MPR host Cathy Wurzer.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Written surveys were distributed to all attendees at the program. It was expected that a majority of
respondents would:
• learn something about light-keeping.
• gain a greater appreciation for life as a light-keeper.
• gain a greater appreciation for Minnesota’s cultural richness.
• indicate they would share a positive review of the program with others.

In addition, library staff would observe a majority of attendees actively engaged in the program by listening attentively and asking questions. Anecdotal responses from attendees would confirm their enjoyment of the program.

Measurable Outcome(s)

The compilation of evaluations is attached. Mike Roberts’ visit far exceeded this librarian’s expectations.
Not only was the attendance more than anticipated, the level of enthusiasm for Roberts’ program was greater
than hoped. Roberts spoke for more than an hour, yet audience members continued to ask questions, and many remained after the formal presentation to meet him, purchase a book, and look at the memorabilia he displayed. Several audience members made a point of telling this librarian how much they enjoyed the information
presented and particularly the humor with which it was presented.

Anecdotal responses included, “It was the best.” “Best storyteller to come here.” and “Great speaker! Very informative and fun! Thank you so very much!”

The formal evaluations showed that all surveys responses were positive. All reported they learned something
about light-keeping; all gained a greater appreciation for life as a light-keeper; all gained a greater appreciation
for Minnesota’s cultural richness; and all indicated they would share a positive review of the program.
