Project Overview
Minnesotan Laura Sobiech, author of “Fly a Little Higher: How God Answered a Mom's Small Prayer in a Big Way,” presented a 45-minute program focusing on the story of her son Zach’s fight against cancer and how Zach’s song “Clouds” has inspired millions of people. Following the formal presentation, the Payne Street Singers, a chorus from New Ulm High School, sang “Clouds.” Sobiech then answered audience questions, and she concluded the evening by signing books and meeting with audience members. This program was part of the three-speaker Life Living Series. To help promote the series, the library created a display of materials featuring the topics being addressed by the speakers. The display included cancer and family inspirational stories.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Written surveys were distributed to all attendees at the program. It was expected that a majority of
respondents would:
• learn something about the Sobiech family.
• gain a greater understanding and appreciation for the Sobiechs’ inspirational journey.
• indicate they would share a positive review of the program with others.
• be interested in reading Laura Sobiech’s book and/or other inspirational stories.

In addition, library staff would observe a majority of attendees actively engaged in the program by listening attentively and asking questions. Anecdotal responses from attendees would confirm their enjoyment of the program.

Measurable Outcome(s)

The survey responses (35 percent return rate) were overwhelmingly positive. All respondents indicated they learned something about the Sobiech family and they gained a greater understanding of and appreciation for the Sobiech’s inspirational journey. The vast majority of survey
respondents indicated they are interested in reading Laura Sobiech’s book and/or other inspirational stories. All reported that they would share a positive review of the program.

This librarian observed audience members listening attentively during the presentation, and they gave Laura Sobiech a standing ovation at its conclusion. The Payne Street Singers’ performance was especially emotional. Several audience members asked questions after the presentation, and there was a long line of people who
met and spoke with Laura.

Anecdotal responses included: “Excellent presentation! Beautiful message!” “The choir was a wonderful
touch.” and “Thank you for bring[ing] attention to osteosarcoma in such a touching and beautiful way!”
