Project Overview
Minnesota author Lorna Landvik spoke and answered questions for about 75 minutes as part of the Life Living Series in New Ulm. Landvik, the author of nine books, including the best-selling “Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons” and “Oh My Stars,” discussed her writing history, using humor in her writing, and her upcoming books. After the program, Landvik signed copies of her books and visited with audience members. Landvik’s program was the third and final in this year’s Life Living Series, which is a long-standing, annual program sponsored by the United Way of Brown County. This was the first year New Ulm Public Library was a project partner. The 2014 series was themed “Telling Our Stories” and featured Landvik and Minnesota authors William Kent Krueger and Kevin Kling.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Written surveys were distributed to all attendees at the presentation. It was expected that a majority of respondents would learn something about Lorna Landvik as a writer, learn a way to use humor in everyday life, indicate they will share a positive review of the program with others and be interested in reading books by Lorna Landvik, other humor writers, and/or other Minnesota authors. In addition, library staff would observe a majority of attendees actively engaged in the program by listening attentively and asking questions. Anecdotal responses from attendees would confirm their enjoyment of the program.

Measurable Outcome(s)

Response rate was 43%. 97% of respondents indicated they learned something about Lorna Landvik as a writer, and 72% indicated they learned a way to use humor in their everyday life. 95% of respondents indicated they would share a positive review of the program, and 95% indicated they were interested in reading books by Lorna Landvik and/or other Minnesota authors. Librarian observed the audience laughing often during Landvik’s program. The Q&A session was particularly lively because Landvik threw chocolate to anyone who asked a question. Audience members stayed after the formal presentation to meet Landvik, purchase books, and have Landvik sign them. Anecdotal responses included: “Excellent speaker.” “Wonderful series – thank you.”
