Project Overview
After unsuccessfully fighting for liberty, democracy, and national unity in Germany and other parts of Europe, the "Forty-eighters" brought their considerable talents to America during the late 1840s and early 1850s. Dr. Joachim "Yogi" Reppmann will discuss the Forty-eighters' impact on the political and social history of America during one of its most critical periods, as well as the ways their movement continues to shape America's immigration landscape today.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Written surveys will be distributed to all attendees at the presentation. It is expected that a majority of respondents will learn something about why the Forty-eighters emigrated to America, learn something about the effect of the Forty-eighters on American political and social history, express a greater understanding of the Forty-eighters' effect on America's immigration landscape today and share a favorable review of this program with others. In addition, library staff will observe a majority of attendees actively engaged in the program by listening attentively and asking questions. Anecdotal responses from attendees will confirm their enjoyment of the program.

Measurable Outcome(s)

This program was highly successful largely because of Dr. Reppmann's enthusiasm for his subject material. His engaging style captured the audience, and several people stayed the full 90-plus minutes. All 21 survey respondents indicated they learned something about why the Forty-eighters emigrated to America, and all learned something about the Forty-eighters' effect on American political and social history. The vast majority of survey respondents also developed a greater understanding of the Forty
eighters' effect on America's immigration landscape today. All survey respondents indicated they would share a positive review of the program and are interested in attending future library events. Librarian observed audience members listening quietly, asking questions, and talking among themselves after the program. Dr. Reppmann was funny, articulate, and interesting.
