Project Overview
Birding enthusiast and speaker Al Batt conducted two hour-long presentations in New Ulm, at the New Ulm Community Center and at New Ulm Public Library, on Thursday, December 5, 2013. Batt, of rural Hartland, Minnesota, presented a slideshow featuring Minnesota birds. During each slide, he named the bird and presented interesting facts, and he interspersed his talk with humorous stories about birds, wildlife, Minnesota culture, and family. After the presentation, Batt signed copies of his new book, “A Life Gone to the Birds.”

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Written surveys were distributed to all attendees at both presentations. It was expected that a majority of respondents would learn something about birding in Minnesota, indicate they intend to use knowledge gained at the program when bird watching, and indicate interest in learning more about birding. In addition, library staff would observe a majority of attendees actively engaged in the program by listening attentively and asking questions. Anecdotal responses from attendees would confirm their enjoyment of the program.

Measurable Outcome(s)

There was a very positive response to this program. At the Community Center, 100% of respondents indicated they learned something about birding in Minnesota, and 75% indicated they will use the knowledge gained during the program when they bird-watch. 65% of respondents indicated they were interested in learning more about birding. At the library, 100% of respondents indicated they learned something about birding in Minnesota, and 85% indicated they will use the knowledge gained during the program when they bird. 92% of respondents indicated they were interested in learning more about birding. Librarian observed attendees at both programs quietly looking at the slides and listening to Batt’s presentation. There was audience interaction at various times with people asking questions and commenting about their own birding experiences. After both programs, audience members remained to talk with Batt, and several people purchased books. Batt was engaging, informative, and entertaining, and he received enthusiastic applause after both of his presentations. Anecdotal responses from survey respondents included, “Great speaker with humor!” “Interesting with humor and storytelling.” “Excellent program! Very good to laugh as we learn.”
