Project Overview
Lunch and a Bite of History was a weeklong series of presentations that focused on historical research related to the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862. Presenters spoke from 30-50 minutes with Q&A sessions following. Some presenters concluded with a book signing session. Monday, August 17 in New Ulm – Independent historian Curtis Dahlin discussed his latest book, “Calamity at Lake Shetek: The Death of a Settlement.” Tuesday, August 18 in Springfield – Murray County Museum Coordinator Janet Timmermann discussed southwest Minnesota’s connection to the Dakota War, including Lake Shetek, Slaughter Slough, and the Great Oasis Trading Post. This lunch event coincided with a van tour, sponsored by the Brown County Historical Society, that encompassed the western part of Brown County. Wednesday, August 19 in New Ulm – Independent historian Jeff Williamson presented “Thomas & John Williamson & the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862” about the influential missionaries to the Dakota. Thursday, August 20 in New Ulm – Independent historian Mary Bakeman presented “Rebuilding Family, Rebuilding Lives” that focused on how widows and orphans moved on after the U.S.-Dakota War. Friday, August 21 in New Ulm – Anne Earl of the Brown County Historical Society discussed the Brown County Historical Society’s depredation claims project. Depredation claims were filed by many survivors after the Dakota War, and many were recently unearthed from the National Archives in Washington, D.C. Bob Burgess of the Brown County Historical Society discussed two archaeological digs of two families killed during the U.S.-Dakota War and the significance of the items found.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Written surveys were distributed to all attendees at each session. It was expected that a majority of respondents at each program would indicate they:
• gained a greater understanding of local history.
• have a greater appreciation for unique cultural perspectives and interpretations.
• have a greater appreciation for critical historical events that continue to shape Minnesota’s
political, economic, social, and community environment today.
• will share a positive review of the program with others.

Measurable Outcome(s)

There was an overwhelmingly positive response to all five programs presented. The vast majority of respondents indicated they learned more about the U.S.-Dakota War of 1862
and were able to place the presenters’ talks into the broader context of the conflict. People from New Ulm,
Sleepy Eye, Springfield, Mankato, Rochester, and the Twin Cities attended the program and were enthusiastic about the topics presented. Every program included interaction between the audience and presenter, and many attendees remained after each program to talk with the speaker and amongst themselves.

Anecdotal responses from attendees included “The information was new and fresh.” “Thank you so much for this program!” and “Please continue involving the Lower Sioux Community.”

This is the fourth year the Brown County Historical Society has presented Lunch and a Bite of History and the third year New Ulm Public Library has been involved, and the partnership has been incredibly successful.
