Project Overview
The public libraries in the Blue Earth Area School District partnered to plan the first Community Reads program in the area. We selected Orphan Train by Christina Baker Kline. We solicited donations from local businesses and organizations to purchase copies of books for giveaway. The school offered to do free advertising for us in their Community Ed booklet and provide space for presentations if necessary. We planned 3 different types of events: book discussions, film showings of a PBS American Experience documentary about the Orphan Train and a presentation by Renee Wendinger. Renee’s mother was a rider on the orphan train and Renee and her book were consulted by the author of Orphan Train during the writing of the novel. She lives in south central Minnesota. Books were distributed and the event was promoted in March. Events were held throughout April and early May in all 3 of the public libraries in the BEA School District.

Proposed Measurable Outcome(s)

Community members will gain a deeper appreciation of reading.
Many community members shared with the librarians and library staff that they hadn’t read “a book like this” for a long time and couldn’t wait to read the next BEA Reads book!
Community members will share their experiences while reading the same book.
Out of the 136 completed evaluations (distributed during events – people were asked to complete the entire survey once but the last question regarding the specific event every time so we didn’t duplicate), 72 people said they had read the book and 23 people said they wanted to. Many people heard about the events from friends/neighbors/family members, so we know they were talking about it.
Community members will experience an intergenerational book-centered discussion.
While we certainly didn’t ask for ages of people at the discussions, the librarians did notice that there were different people in different age groups who attended all three of the events and had a common positive experience.
Community members will learn more about the history developed in this book.
Out of the 136 completed evaluations, 107 people said YES to the question about learning something about Minnesota’s History.

One comment left on an evaluation said, “Excellent. Thanks! This is was a wonderful learning opportunity for our community. So close to home. Thank you” and that sums up just about everything else we’ve heard from our community members in our libraries.
